Ukrainian Superstitions 재미있는 우크라이나 미신 Украинские суеверия

 

 

There are a lot of supersitions in Ukraine.	우크라이나에는 미신이 많습니다.
However, not all Ukrainians believe them.	그러나 모든 사람들이 미신을 믿는 것은 아닙니다.
1. If your ears or cheeks become hot, it means someone else is talking about you.	1. 귀나 볼이 달아 오르면 누군가 내 얘기를 하고 있다는 뜻입니다.
2. A superstition about whistling:	2. 그리고 휘파람에 대한 미신도 있어요.
If you whistle at home, you lose money.	집에서 휘파람을 불면 돈이 없어집니다.
(comment: In Korea you should not whistle at night only, but in Ukraine you should not at all.)	(comment: 한국에서는 밤에만 휘파람을 불면 안 되는데 우크라이나에서는 아예 안 되는군요.)
This is how this superstition formed.	이 미신에는 내력이 있어요.
In the old days, robbers signaled to each other by whistling.	옛날에 강도들이 강도질할 때 서로에게 휘파람으로 신호를 했어요.
Therefore, if you whistle, you invite robbers to your home.	그러니까 휘파람을 불면 강도들을 자기 집으로 부르는 것과 같습니다.
3. If you put your left foot first when getting up in the morning, you become irritable that day.	3. 잠자리에서 일어날 때 왼 발을 먼저 딛으면 기분이 나쁘게 됩니다.
So you say 'Ты что, не с той ноги встал?' to someone who's being quarrelsome.	그래서 짜증 내는 사람에게는 Ты что, не с той ноги встал? 이라고 합니다.
In English, 'Have you put your left foot first?'	한국어로는 '다른 발로 일어난 거지?' ('맞는 발로 일어나지 않았지?') 정도가 됩니다.
4. When someone inside a house  receives something from someone outside, the person inside should step on the threshold with one foot and take it rather than take it across the threshold.	4. 집 안에 있는 어떤 사람이 밖에 있는 사람으로부터 뭔가를 받을 때는 그냥 현관문 안에서 받기보다는 한쪽 발로 현관문 문지방을 밟고 받아야 합니다.
If not, they get involved in an argument.	이렇게 하지 않는다면 서로 다투게 됩니다.
It appears a little rude to give something over the threshold even without the superstition.	근데 이 미신이 아니더라도 어떤 사람에게 뭔가를 현관문 건너로 주는 것은 조금 불친절하게 보입니다.
5. Next, if you wash your hair on the previous day of your test, you cannot do well in the test.	5. 다음 미신입니다. 시험 전날에 머리를 감으면 시험을 잘 볼 수 없습니다.
(comment: But my smart Ukrainian friend used to get good grades even though she ignored the superstition and washed her hair.)	(comment: 하지만 똑똑한 제 우크라이나 친구는 머리를 감고도 성적을 아주 잘 받았다고 합니다.)
(comment: If the length of the test period is several days, for instance, Thursday through Tuesday, which is quite common in Korea, you cannot get to wash your hair for five days!)	(comment: 우리나라 같이 시험이 몇일에 걸치는 경우, 예를 들어 목금월화, 이렇게 4 (사)일간 시험인 경우 머리를 무려 5 (오)일간이나 못 감게 되네요.)
6. Ukrainians consider it very unlucky to go back; for instance, when you've left something at home and remember it outside.	6. 우크라이나 사람들은 집에 물건을 두고 나온 것이 생각나든지 해서 다시 돌아가는 것은 매우 재수가 없다고 생각합니다.
If you definitely must take it, you have to look at yourself in the mirror back at home if you don't want something very bad to happen.	만약 꼭 그 물건을 가져와야 한다면 집에 와서는 거울을 봐야 합니다. 그렇지 않으면 매우 나쁜 일이 생깁니다.
7. It brings misfortune to take out  trash in the evening; you'll be poor.	7. 저녁에 쓰레기를 버리는 것은 불운을 가져 옵니다. 저녁에 쓰레기를 버리면 가난해집니다.
8. Not only in Ukraine, but in many other countries as well, the number thirteen is considered unlucky.	8. 우크라이나 뿐만 아니라 다른 나라에도 13(십삼)이라는 숫자는 재수가 없다고 생각하는 사람이 많습니다.
When he had the last supper, Jesus was with his twelve disciples.	예수님이 마지막 저녁 식사를 하셨을 때 제자 12(열 두) 명과 같이 식사를 하셨어요.
One of them became a betrayer.	그 제자 중에서 한 제자는 배반자가 되었습니다.
Thus, the number thirteen is called чёртова дюжина.	그래서 13(십삼)을 чёртова дюжина라고 부릅니다.
In English, 'demon's twelve'.	한국어로는 '악마의 십이’가 됩니다.
9. If you eat in the corner of a table, you cannot get married.	9. 탁자에서 먹을 때 탁자 모서리에 앉으면 결혼을 할 수 없습니다.
A long time ago it was the most dishonorable place to sit, mostly for spinsters and poor relatives.	옛날에 그 곳은 대개 노처녀들이나 가난한 친척들이 앉는, 불명예스러운 곳이었습니다.
10. If you see a black cat crossing your path, you become unlucky.	10. 검은 고양이가 길을 건너는 것을 보면 복이 나갑니다. (불행하게도)
In contrast, a white cat crossing your path is good luck.	반대로 흰 고양이가 길을 건너면 좋은 일이 생깁니다. (다행히도)
(comment: Poor black cat. Why is it hated so much? (one day later) Well, I admit some black cats do look scary.)	(comment: 검은 고양이가 불쌍하다는 생각 밖에는… ㅠ.ㅠ (하루 후) 근데 검은 고양이가 무섭게 생기긴 생겼네요. ^^;;)
