One of the reasons I am fond of Ukraine is that its history, characterized by frequent foreign invasions, reminds me of our own history, especially the Japanese invasions.	제가 우크라이나를 좋아하는 이유 중의 하나는 외국 침략을 자주 받았던 우크라이나의 역사가 우리나라의 역사를 (특히 일본의 침략을) 떠올리게 하기 때문입니다.
Owing to its geographic location, Ukraine suffered countless times of aggression by Russia, Poland, Turkey and the Tartars.	지리적인 위치 때문에, 우크라이나는 러시아, 폴란드, 터키, 타타르인들로부터 여러 차례의 공격을 받았습니다.
Poland! I was astounded to hear that Poland was one of the bad neighbors because I had heard that how the Polish went through hard times under the Russian occupation -for instance, young Maria Skłodowska and her classmates had to hide Polish books when a Russian superintendent visited her school without notice.	폴란드라니! 저는 폴란드가 우크라이나를 침략한 나라 중의 하나라는 것을 알게 되었을 때 매우 놀랐습니다. 왜냐하면 저는 폴란드 사람들이 러시아의 점령하에서 얼마나 고통을 받았는지 전에 들었거든요. 예를 들어 퀴리 부인이 어렸을 때 학교에 불시에 러시아 장학사가 찾아 왔을 때 폴란드어 교과서를 숨겨야 했던 거라든지.
I am really dying to know whether the Polish now feel bad about themselves for occupying Ukraine and apologized to it.	폴란드 사람들이 우크라이나를 식민 지배한 것에 대해서 미안해하는지 우크라이나에 사과했는지 정말 궁금합니다.
However, somehow, Ukrainian's attitude towards the Polish is not as bitter as towards the Russians, I think.	그러나 우크라이나 사람들은 폴란드 사람들의 침략에 대해서 러시아 사람들의 침략에 대해서 느끼는 것 만큼은 느끼지 않는 것 같습니다.
Because, I presume, they were the lesser of the evils to them.	아마도 둘을 비교할 때 그나마 폴란드의 지배가 더 심하지 않았기 때문이 아닌가 합니다.
At least, they don't seem to have banned use of the Ukrainian language among the Ukrainians, as the Russians did.	적어도 폴란드 사람들은 러시아 사람들이 그랬던 것처럼 우크라이나 사람들이 우크라이나어를 사용하는 것을 금지하지는 않은 것 같습니다.
My Ukrainian friend told me that if anyone spoke Ukrainian under the Russian rule, they were put in jail, which strongly reminds me what the Japanese empire did to Koreans, punishing schoolchildren who spoke Korean at school and forcing us to have Japanese names instead of Korean ones.	제 우크라이나 친구가 그러는데 러시아 통치하에서는 누구든지 우크라이나어를 말하면 감옥에 갇혀야 했대요. 일본이 우리에게 했던 짓이랑 너무 비슷하지 않습니까? 일제 하에서는 아이들이 학교에서 한국어를 말하면 벌을 받았고 또 한국사람들은 한국 이름 대신에 일본이름을 갖도록 강요 받았죠.
What Russia committed is obviously wrong.	러시아가 행한 일은 분명히 잘못된 것입니다.
Just as the Russian language is valuable, so are the Ukrainian or Polish languages; the Russians should have respected other peoples' languages as well as their own language.	러시아어가 소중한 만큼, 우크라이나어나 폴란드어도 중요하죠. 러시아 사람들은 자기들의 언어만큼이나 다른 민족들의 언어도 존중해야했는데 말입니다.
Anyway, I hope Ukraine and its aforementioned neighbors have a good and peaceful relationship, respecting each other.	어쨌든, 저는 우크라이나와 그 이웃 국가들이 서로를 존중하며 평화로운 관계를 가지길 바랍니다.
